Welcome!

The Emerald Chapter of North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS), based in Eugene, serves the central part of western Oregon. The Chapter is interested in both encouraging and promoting the study and cultivation of alpine plants and other low-growing perennials that thrive among rocks. We hope this website will be a valuable resource for local gardeners interested in creating rock gardens in our climate. Membership in Emerald Chapter NARGS is open to any interested individual. Yearly dues are $15. For information about membership, contact us, or download an Emerald Chapter membership brochure 2010 here.

What We Do

Our chapter has monthly meetings from October to April or May, usually at 7pm on the first Tuesday of the month at the Eugene Garden Club at 1645 High Street (map). We designed and built and continue to maintain the Sebring Rock Garden, one of the largest public rock gardens in the state. We also sell plants propagated by members at a plant sale every spring. These include unusual plants suitable for rock gardens that may be difficult to find elsewhere. Most years we host a workshop to build troughs suitable for small plants. Each summer we organize a camping trip to a location in the mountains of Oregon to see rock plants in the wild, as well as to enjoy the camaraderie of members of our chapter and those of other NARGS chapters in Oregon, and to just plain have fun! We also organize occasional field trips to visit nurseries, go on day hikes, or see gardens. Membership in the chapter includes many rewards. In addition to participation in events, members benefit from a large library of rock gardening books, access to seeds and plants of rock garden species, and a wealth of knowledge from other members on rock gardening and plants.
