The North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS)
NARGS is for gardening enthusiasts interested in alpine, saxatile, and low-growing perennials. It encourages the study and cultivation of wildflowers that grow well among rocks, whether such plants originate above treeline or at lower elevations. Through its publications, meetings, and garden visits, NARGS provides extensive opportunities for both beginners and experts to expand their knowledge of plant cultivation and propagation, and of construction, maintenance, and design of special interest gardens. Woodland gardens, bog gardens, raised beds, planted walls, container gardens, and alpine berms are all addressed. Toward this end, NARGS offers its members the Rock Garden Quarterly, an annual seedlist, local and national chapter meetings, a mail order book service, a book lending library, a slide lending library, and a growing web presence. NARGS is also now sponsoring botanizing tours to spectacular mountain areas of the U. S.
The Rock Garden Quarterly is published every three months. A subscription comes with an annual membership in NARGS. Articles—most illustrated in color—are contributed by members around the world on a wide range of subjects involving alpines and other wildflowers: methods of propagation from seeds and cuttings; special sites in the garden for particular plants; detailed accounts of plants in the wild; hints on cultivation, etc. Advertisements provide sources for the specialized gardener, and many will not be found elsewhere.
The Seed Exchange distributes seeds of thousands of choice plants contributed from members around the world—from the wild as well as the garden. Some of these are not otherwise available in the horticultural trade.
