Sebring Garden
The Emerald Chapter has constructed one of the largest public rock gardens in North America. Built in 1998, the Sebring Garden, named for Eugene residents and charter members Virginia and Gene Sebring, is located in Alton Baker Park, just east of the Ferry Street Bridge. The garden is in part organized by geographical origin of the plants, with separate Western American, Alpine, Mediterranean, and Southern Hemisphere sections. Hundreds of species of herbaceous perennials and dwarf shrubs, many of them rarely seen in garden cultivation, provide color throughout the season. Early bulbs, conifers, and hebes are particularly nice in early spring. The garden is maintained by Chapter volunteers. In spring of 2008, for its 10th anniversary, chapter members rebuilt and renovated parts of the garden.

Could you please tell me what variety of ceanothus is in the garden? Also, are those small plants with various vividly colored flowers called helianthemum? I enjoyed visiting the Sebring Garden so much! What a lovely place. You inspired me to try some of those plants in my own garden. Thanks for your help.
